Internet Party

posted January 17, 2008 in Interweb

Check out this hilarious clip from Cracked.com about a party where all the guests are famous websites. Now before I even attempt to explain the incredible nerdiness of the humour contained in this video and end up making myself look like a nerd of the Nth degree while simultaneously boring you so much you go do something else… just go watch it.

Persepolis

Mish and I went to see Persepolis on the weekend. It’s an animated film about a little girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and follows her through her teens and into her early 20s under the Iranian fundamentalists. Definitely a sombre story, but what’s interesting is how the seriousness isn’t watered down at all by the charming cartoonishness of the film. When big boys like Disney are shutting down their hand-drawn animation studios it’s nice to see a movie like this to remind you how totally inferior computer animation is on so many levels. It just can’t communicate the warmness that you can only get from something created by human hands.

On another note… it’s kind of baffling to me how many theatres are in downtown Vancouver. Thankfully only a few of them play the blockbusters so we end up with a surprisingly wide selection of all kinds of good films. Of course, there are lots of bad ones too. (Thanks Tracy Morgan — because of you being in this movie I don’t have to bother thinking about going because I know it sucks)

New Favourite Site

posted January 10, 2008 in Music

The Hype Machine is a slick slick slick aggregator of tunes being posted on good music blogs all over the world.  You can listen to their streaming radio station or just bounce around the tonnes of tracks constantly added to the site like you’ve got the ultimate music snob’s iPod in your hands on perpetual shuffle.  For all you music stealers, in most cases you can just click through to the blog that posted the track and find a link for a direct download.

But for you lazy music stealers, something like Station Ripper lets you just rip the MP3s from the radio stream – no muss, no fuss and no clicks required!
