I was cleaning out my inbox and came across this quote from comedian Demetri Martin:
“I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades.”
So true.
I’m heading to Cuba this Friday with my new employer (assuming he can get his passport made in 48 hours) and a couple of friends from Ottawa. Twilight Zone aspect of this trip: Castro just quit his job of 49 years. I just quit my job of 7 years. 7 is the square root of 49.
For the last couple of weeks I’ve bought prosciutto for my sandwiches at lunch. Of all the cured meats, prosciutto is my favourite. I do, however, have one gripe about this otherwise perfect and delicious meat. Now, when they slice prosciutto they slice it real thin. Like 5000 year old parchment thin. That’s not the issue I have. Despite being cut thin, it’s still strong as hell. So strong, in fact, that when I take the first bite out of my sandwich it’s very difficult to not pull all the prosciutto out and have it dangling from my mouth while I hold an empty sandwich in my hands. An empty sandwich with very deep finger marks from squeezing it so hard to try to keep the prosciutto between the slices of bread. I either need sharper teeth or lessons on how to properly make a sandwich with this nearly flawless deli meat. Anybody got any suggestions?
In an age where the Grammys are more irrelevant and out of touch with today’s music industry than ever, it was refreshing to see this come out of last night’s broadcast.
This adaptation of the song is from the movie Across the Universe, which I recommend everybody go see. Aside from that, it sure proves that the Beatles music still stands head and shoulders above anything else being done today.
On a related note, it was nice to see Amy Winehouse clean up last night (a priceless reaction to her winning record of the year). Despite all that crap in the media about her personal life I’m glad the Grammys were able to demonstrate a rare bit of non-terrible judgment in awarding her with a few trophies. What puzzles me though is why somebody so heavily influenced by the classic sounds of Stax and Motown is in the pop/rock category instead of R&B. Doesn’t make much sense to me. Just because her music has real guitars and drums and no synth doesn’t mean it’s not R&B. Get her in the category she belongs in so she can she can put on a clinic on what real soul music sounds like.
