Editors, Hot Hot Heat and Louis XIV @ The Commodore

posted February 6, 2008 in Music

As mentioned previously in the title, Mish and I went to the Commodore last night to see Editors, Hot Hot Heat and Louis XIV (the band, not the King of France). The latter being the band I wanted to see most of all. Ever since I heard Finding Out True Love Is Blind I’ve been hooked on their raunchy, sloppy, classic Bowie sound. Wickedly loud lead geetars firmly in the red and clap-along drums… good ‘ol rock’n'roll to me. Unfortunately my chronic procrastination caused us to arrive just after their set. Crap.

That gave us plenty of time to stand around and feel like knobs before HHH played. They did a relatively short set, but it was pretty good. I’ve never been a huge fan but they have a lot of good tunes. Sounded like they were about to head into a studio here in Vancouver to work on a new album. Right on.

Editors, who I can’t say I really knew before this show, were the big headliners. From the looks of it most of the crowd came out to see them. To their credit they’re a real tight band with some great tunes, but they’re way too much of an Interpol clone for me. I guess technically speaking Interpol is kind of ripping Joy Division’s sound anyways. But I digress. I just couldn’t really get into Editors. Maybe my ear isn’t sophisticated enough to detect the subtle nuances that exist in sparse chirpy guitar and monotonic vocals over heavy bass and drums. One funny thing I noticed (funny to me at least) was the image crisis in the band. All members were decked out in proper indie rock attire (skinny jeans and t-shirts) except for the bassist who decided to go with the black t-shirt and suit jacket combo with perfectly coiffed hair. Either he had just returned from or was just about to go to clubbing.

We left about half way through Editors’ set and — to add insult to injury — whilst taking a leak I discovered on the poster above the urinal that the Hives show I’m going to miss in a couple weeks added The Donnas to the bill as the opener. Double fack!
