They were wicked. Powerful enough to transmit from the backyard to the frontyard! Regarding Lost. Can we assume that Ben "couldn't" kill Widmore because of the same force that was stopping Michael from killing himself? Seems likely to me. And the whole nano-particle cloud being controlled by Ben was a bit of a revelation. Perhaps he was the one setting it loose on the survivors at the beginning of the first season.
