RIP Ron Asheton

posted January 23, 2009 in Music

How the fuck did I miss this?  I know it’s not exactly big news, but damn… he died like two weeks ago.  Heart attack at 60.

Not much else to say but to celebrate the fine guitar work great of one of rock’s true greats.  I’m sure Ron will be one of those guys who’s impact will only be fully acknowledged now that he’s gone.

Crank this one…

Time to line up all the Stooges albums for my day of belated mourning.

Last Chart mag ever

posted January 21, 2009 in Music / Thoughts

img_0621Yup, it’s the end of the road for Chart… the printed Chart at least.  Issue #201 arrived at my place a few days ago.  They’ve been publishing it for 19 years and I’ve been subscribing for 11.

Chart will continue to exist exclusively online as they’ve decided to focus all their efforts on running the fancy shmants new ChartAttack.com.

Now, I’m all for technology and reducing waste (as evidenced by my new low emissions vehicle) but I’m kind of bummed to see the printed mag fall by the wayside.  It’s especially a bummer given the fact that I’m not too big a fan of the new Chart site.  Which is extra unfortunate considering it took them like 280 years to build it.  Guess we’ll be stuck with this one until the next millennium.

And for extra salt in the wound… why the hell did you have to put these ass-clowns on the cover of the LAST ISSUE EVER? Way a mediocre way to cap the run of a pretty damn good magazine.

Blitzen Trapper – Gold for Bread

posted January 18, 2009 in Jukebox / Music

Blitzen Trapper hails from Portland and as of this very moment has one of the most bad-ass band logos I’ve ever seen.  Get a good look at it on the cover to their latest LP Furr.

Here’s the most excellent track “Gold for Bread” off that album.  Go buy it on Sub Pop.  (I feel extra compelled to support Sub Pop after going to the EMP in Seattle)
