White Stripes play out Conan

posted February 23, 2009 in Movies / Music / TV

So Conan O’Brien taped his last “Late Night” on Friday.  Jimmy Fallon takes over in March (no comment) while O’Brien gets ready to take over the “Late Show” in June.  For his final show Conan called on his old friends the White Stripes to round things out.  Conan and the Stripes go way back — remember they played a week-long residency in 2005 — and according to Rolling Stone Conan has known the band since the late 90s — way before they hit the big time.

Interestingly… the White Stripes had bailed on touring to support Icky Thump because of Meg’s anxiety problems so this is technically their first performance in nearly 2 years.  They did a pretty soulful version of “We’re going to be friends” sans drums… kinda cool.

And speaking of Jared Hess (this is the song that plays in the opening credits of Napolean Dynamite) you need to all go meet Ronald Chevalier – star of Hess’ new film Gentleman Broncos.

Night Marchers

nightmarchers

For fans of RFTC, the Sultans and the Hot Snakes… a new CD from the Night Marchers. It’s John Reis’ (aka Speedo’s) new band.  You can order it online or pick it up on iTunes.

After inventing stainless steel and “Ass Kicking Rock and Roll”, here they go again reinventing the MP3! It’s a new year and another handful of mind-blowing rat turds are flung at the “scene.” Your iPod never sounded as crispy. Ladies and Gentleman…. I present to you the next SoCal, mall punk, stupor group; THE NIGHT MARCHERS!…. apparitions of modern day street warriors that manifest in the neglected corners of subterranean, Rock ‘n Roll lore.

Colour photos of Nazi Germany

A pretty massive collection of colour photos from Nazi Germany. You’ll notice a lot of them have a LIFE watermark in the bottom corner.  I just discovered that Google has made available a veritable fucktonne of photos from the archives of Time and LIFE magazines.

To search the archives, just do a Google image search and add “source:life” to your query. (e.g. woodstock source:life)

The resolution of the images is actually pretty decent and every single image has a caption, photographer credit, location, date and is fully tagged. Really impressive stuff. You can even buy framed prints right on the image’s page.

If anybody’s listening, I’ll take one of these please.
