A few things I learned from Gimme Shelter: Deconstructed

On June 9th I posted a little tool to let people play with the separated tracks from Gimme Shelter. Since then I’ve observed that:
- People like to play with this. Lots and lots of people. More than I ever thought would find it.
- These separated tracks actually originated from the game Rock Band. So much for my claim that Bill Wyman dropped the master tapes off at my house.
- The above point was brought to my attention by a very kind and courteous DMCA takedown notification letter.
As a result I’ve had to take it down. It was fun while it lasted!
Natural White Noise for Babies, Charles Bradley, The Greenhornes, Tame Impala, The Barreracudas, Ty Segall, King Tuff, Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Vile, The Kinks, Starvin Hungry, Bad Sports, Redd Kross, nick curran & the lowlifes, Sloan
Such a shame this has gone – there was me thinking it was the most inventive thing the Stones had done to promote themselves in years.
Totally loved the toy and always loved the track!
Thanks while it lasted!
It was indeed very good fun and great to hear the individual parts. It also makes me think that this could be a viable commercial option for future archive releases. Could you imagine what could be done with all the outtakes from the Beach Boys Smile sessions? Reconstruct Smile, including running order, mix and inserting all the overlapping parts would be a great experience. Capitol should be petitioned!
The record companies would never let us have that much fun… but I agree, it would be such an empowering, fascinating and incredibly creative experience to let listeners have this kind of insight into how those classic releases come together in the studio. All you need is the ability to turn tracks on and off – no EQ, no volume, etc.
All these fantastic mashups would crop up… which I’d love to hear… but the record companies cringe at the idea of people making art (not even money, just art) using something they own. It’s very much a “I’m taking my ball and going home” attitude, which doesn’t make the playground fun for the rest of us.
WOW! WHAT A COOL IDEA! Thank you for trying to share this.
I think I a clue here. Check out:

Does this look familiar? Maybe THAT’S why they shut you down. Because the artists themselves wanna do this.
Thank you for your efforts, tho.
Could you send me a private email, please? I have a technical question for you.
I’m sorry, go here:
