My (almost) annual tradition of picking the top 10ish albums I bought (or discovered) in the last calendar year continues… behold!

  1. Ty Segall – Twins (Drag City)
    Ty released 4 albums in 15 months. That’s how long it takes most bands to write a song.
  2. Band of Horses – Mirage Rock (Columbia)
  3. Bad Sports – Kings of the Weekend (Dirtnap)
    Lo-fi 70s punk from Denton, Texas. Technically released in 2011. Sue me.
  4. Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band – No Time For Dreaming (Daptone)
    This one’s from 2011 too but goddamn if Charles doesn’t have more soul in his little finger than the Billboard R&B Hot 100 combined. And plenty enough to last us through 2012 with his film.
  5. Heartless Bastards – Arrow (Partisan)
  6. Joel Plaskett – Scrappy Happiness (MapleMusic)
  7. The Jolts – 8% (Sudden Death)
  8. King Tuff – S/T (SubPop)
  9. Mount Carmel – Real Women (Siltbreeze)

    On June 9th I posted a little tool to let people play with the separated tracks from Gimme Shelter. Since then I’ve observed that:

    1. People like to play with this. Lots and lots of people. More than I ever thought would find it.
    2. These separated tracks actually originated from the game Rock Band. So much for my claim that Bill Wyman dropped the master tapes off at my house.
    3. The above point was brought to my attention by a very kind and courteous DMCA takedown notification letter.
    As a result I’ve had to take it down.  It was fun while it lasted!

I found Dana’s amazing chalk lettering and design work on Dribbble and noticed she was doing some label designs for a BC winery. Check out this shot of one of the label designs:

    Even cooler is this time lapse showing her creating the original piece (on a board 7 feet wide by 4 feet high).  As a guy who relies way too much on CTRL+Z in my day-to-day work, when I see people doing proper analog work it just totally blows my mind.  What a labour of love…
